FOOTBALL PRACTICE STARTS FOR ROCKETS

August 7, 2008 - Toledo's football team hit the practice field for the first time today, determined to put two losing seasons behind them. The spirit was excellent from the squad, but as usual, it's hard to get a handle on early practices when there are no pads and no contact.

But that doesn't mean that there aren't a few stories, and of course seeing the new players for the first time is a treat.

One thing that's apparent right away is that Rocket receivers should be deeper and better this year, and that includes the tight ends. Stephen Williams looked in mid-season form as he streaked effortlessly down the field catching a pass in full stride showing speed and power that could make him almost unstoppable this season. And a couple of freshmen, Sam Gaymon and Kenny Stafford look like they have the tools to help out right away. Signee Phillip Barnett did not qualify, but will be in school this fall.

Toledo's group of tight ends may not have the bulk of some former units, but they do have speed and can catch the ball. 6-5 redshirt freshman Danny Noble looked more like a wide-out with his quick moves. John Allen, Matt Fought and massive 6-7 Jerome Jones all showed good ability to catch the ball. Now we need to find out if they can block.

The offensive line looks solid with a number of returnees and some young guys mixed in. One newcomer, Phillipkeith Manley is truly a massive young man. He has the biggest legs I've ever seen on a lineman and he looks like a trim 300 pounds. Former defensive tackle Nate Cole has moved to backup center after Levi George decided to give up football. Cole won't have to fight to keep the weight off in his new position, and adds another athletic player to the OL.

Starting quarterback Aaron Opelt was very sharp passing for the first day of practice and really had some zip on the ball. He almost looks like more of a linebacker on the field. Freshman QB David Pasquale had some passing form problems, but it was just the first practice. Pasquale may be the first UT quarterback I've seen that rolls up his sleeves, just like the linebackers with big biceps. Of course, he did throw the shot put 58 feet, so I guess he's allowed.

And Morgan Williams was finally in a UT uniform, but just watching him run drills didn't show much. Word is that DaJuane Collins came into camp in great shape, so if Williams is looking for playing time, he has his work cut out for him.

UT's defensive line has a number of new faces this year, and some players who have changed positions. Former linebackers Keith Forestal, Terrell Willis and Derrick Summers all giving defensive end a try. Tom Amstutz says they may, or may not, remain at DE. Two freshmen were physically impressive, Malcolm Riley at tackle and John Lamb at end.

Right now it looks like Archie Donald and JC transfer Daris Quinn are the early starters at middle linebacker, but there are a number of players who could challenge them. Freshman Damien McIntosh showed some good pursuit speed.

Defensive back may be the deepest position for the Rockets. At safety and corner there are experienced returnees plus some quality newcomers. The battle for playing time could be the fiercest on the team. Standout safety signee, Jermaine Robinson, will not be on the team. He will attend prep school with the hope that he can return next year.
